Gigging in the
early years.... Since we
really can't recall all the shows we did in the period from 1986 to 1992
(….t's the drugs, dude..) we decided to make a short summary of the
absolute highlights of the past 'Years of Glory'
1986: September 6th; first ever actual Thanatos live show at the “Haring
en Bier Fest”, Vlaardingen, Holland
1987: various shows with the likes of Messiah (Rotterdam, April 18th and
Dynamo, Einhoven December 24th), Deathrow (Venray, July 24th)
1988: July 9th; Metal Attak Festival, Eibergen (a great festival in an
ancient amphi theatre with bands like Kreator, Death Angel, Holy Moses and
Pestilence), various shows with the likes of Napalm Death (Rotterdam, June
18th). Ludichrist (Rotterdam, November 11th),
1989: March 11th; our first ever show in Portugal! Performing as
headliners in front of over 1,000 crazy Portuguese maniacs (whilst still
being a demo band!)in Almada/Lisbon.
A planned gig as support act for Death on February 26th in Oud Gastel
turns into a very strange evening when Death arrive at the show but aren’t
able to perform cause Chuck lost his voice the night before! Obviously
shitting his pants because of a few hundred upset Death fans, the
organizer of the club even comes up with the idea to let Stephan fill in
for Chuck on vocals (!), but noone really takes his idea seriously.
1990: March 4th; performing at one of the first metal festivals in
Nighttown, Rotterdam with Bolt Thrower, Autopsy, Mucky Pup a.o. in front
0f 800-1,000 people May 31st; Thanatos supports Sepultura on one of the
Dutch dates of their ‘Arise’ tour (Het Paard, Den Haag) and teaches the
Brasilians new standards in the art of smoking grass! Which is even
mentioned by the band in an interview they do with Kerrang! Magazine
Thanatos embarks on their first small European tour. A handful of gigs in
Portugal, France, Belgium and Germany turn into a great holiday-like
fortnight where we are litteraly treated like ‘Gods in France’ by the
organiser of the French leg of this small tour (thanx Claudia, we will
never forget this!)! Sold out shows in venues like Bolwerk (Sneek) and 't
Beest (Goes).
1991: After being approached by a national TV station that want to film a
Thanatos show and use the material for a TV show about death metal, the
band organize a small festival in Willem II, Den Bosch on March 3rd with
support acts like Gorefest and Dead Head. The funny thing is that both
Gorefest and Dead Head have parts of their shows broadcasted while
Thanatos isn’t featured in the actual TV-show, because of a ‘slight
collision’ with the guys from the TV-team that want us to act like a bunch
of clowns for the TV show which is actually meant to take the piss out of
metal in general, so fuck them! The band plays several headline shows in
France, Germany and Belgium and on September 28th, a couple of days before
entering the studio to record their 2nd album, Thanatos plays a headline
show in Nighttown, Rotterdam in front of more than 800 people…those were
the days… I guess most of those people died between 1991 and 2004
considering the “size” of the Rotterdam metal scene nowadays, which is a
fucking joke!
1992: After the release of 'Realm Of Ecstasy' Thanatos are confirmed as
the support act for Cannibal Corpse on their forthcoming European tour.
Unfortunately all 31 dates are cancelled 4 weeks (!) before the tour is
supposed to kick off, cause Metal Blade wants CC to record a new album
first! There’s talk of doing a 3 week tour with Exhorder but this also
falls through because of internal troubles in Exhorder. Following these
small desasters Thanatos plays some of the bigger Dutch clubs like
Nighttown, Rotterdam (with support acts Sinister and The Gathering!),
Paard, Den Haag, Noorderligt, Tilburg as headliners, but the problems
within the band and the problems with the record company keep growing and
this finally culminates in the band's farewell show at Holland's most
prestigious venue Paradiso in Amsterdam on August 29th
The Undead will Rest in Peace..for now..
1994: January 8th; Thanatos plays a one off reunion show at the opening of
the new building of Rotterdam’s premier rock and
metal club 'De Blokhut'.
Once again the Undead return to their Ancient Slumber until the Second
Awakening in 1999. ©2009 thanatos.info |
